Cleaning the hebridean croft well, Isle of lewis

Before taps we had the benefit of fresh Hebridean spring water and the enjoyment of collecting it, being near to nature. My... grandfather Suilpean (Iain Ban) constructed this one with nothing more than stones and inherited knowledge. This well was one of the most prized, its water is excellent and is abundant all year round (other wells might dry up in the Summer) and lovely and cool on a Summer's day raking hay beside it. Wells were a crucial resource. Women would sit and knit socks waiting ...
