Guilty Pleasures: The Videos We Hate to Love Aug 24, 20099:37 PDT

Christian the Lion

Is there really any better guilty pleasure than pop culture? I mean, all of us have a television show, band, or movie we secretly love but would never admit to. Sure, we cut our 80’s hair and no longer put posters on our walls, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t somewhere inside of us that smiles when our guilty pleasure crosses our paths… as long as no one’s looking, of course.

Since I have the advantage of having all the videos on our site to pull from, I thought I’d use them to illustrate some of my favorite guilty pleasures…

1. Internet Memes Involving Animals

They’re silly and cute, and they crowd your inbox when well-meaning friends pass them along, but, really, admit it. They’re fun, and you love them.

2. Acoustic Covers of Guilty Pleasure Songs

Nothing like a great fresh take on a song you’d never admit you liked in the first place.

3. Musicals

Yeah. Musicals are like the title to a bad, unnecessary movie sequel (another guilty pleasure). Musicals are Guilty Pleasure IV: The Guiltiest.

4. Intervention

Always feel guilty when taking pleasure from knowing other people’s lives are way more screwed up than yours. It’s why they invented reality TV in the first place!

5. Public Humiliation

Is there really anything better than watching someone become the target of a perfectly executed prank, as long as you’re in on it? This is by far one of my favorites:

Of course some of these are things I shouldn’t like… and would never admit to liking… that’s what puts the guilt into the pleasure. But I don’t think of myself as a bad person for it. When the going gets tough, sometimes indulging in a guilty pleasure is exactly what you need.

The Great Experiment

This was cool to read (and watch). Christian The Lion is one of my all time favorite Youtube vids. Also, I like drinking beer and watching intervention. Isn’t that weird? You’d think it’d put me off drinking, but somehow it makes me feel better because I can tell myself I’m not as bad as those people.

I also love Christian. We recently saw the whole documentary here in the UK - The Lion Cub from Harrods. It’s just amazing.

Really nice work! I’m so very proud of you!
Nicely diverse selection of topics and videos.
    Well done!

I totally agree with Monica, I watch Intervention religiously. I drink beer while watching it as well. There are things on that show that relate to my family and I always end up crying….I’m a baby!;)
