A Real-Time Look at What People Are Watching - VideoSurf’s New APIs Sep 10, 20095:15 PDT

VideoSurf Introduces Live Stream API and More

We’re very happy to announce the release of eight new APIs that allow an unprecedented flexibility in the way you incorporate video into your site. With VideoSurf’s new APIs, you now have at your fingertips not only our unique visual search results, but also related videos, entity recognition and information, hot search terms, and a powerful live-stream look at the videos people are watching on VideoSurf, in real time!

Taken together, this new API set gives you a unique access to what people are watching, who they’re watching, and an instant look at the hottest videos, people, and topics on the web.

A Real-Time Look At What People Are Watching

Our new Real-Time Activity Stream API opens up the fire hose and allows you a real time look at what videos are being watched on VideoSurf, right now. You can choose between two versions of the stream, a “live” stream or a pooled stream that delivers the video data in periodic bursts.

The API stream can be filtered to remove or include explicit content. No viewer information is included in the API, all viewers are anonymous.

Hot People, Hot Searches

As people have increasingly come to rely on the web for up to the minute tracking of hot topics, VideoSurf has developed methods to stay on top of the latest trends, 24/7. VideoSurf is constantly monitoring trending topics both on our site and across the web and our home page features two prominent ways (Hot Searches and People In the Spotlight) to discover video related to hot trends. We’ve opened up both of these outputs and made them available to you through our Featured Entity and Featured Search Terms APIs.

These APIs return a list of the search terms and people that are the most popular topics of discussion, and with them your site stays current, even when you’re sleeping.

Get Deeper Information On The People In Your Videos

With our Entity Recognition and Entity Information APIs, you get unprecedented access to structured data for the subjects of our videos. An entity can be thought of as a name, whether it’s Britney Spears or American Idol or the Boston Red Sox or New York City. We maintain an ever-expanding database of more than 200,000 individual entities, categorized by type and associated with images, videos, and a variety of relevant meta data structures.

A call to our Entity Recognition API allows you to submit a plain text query (i.e. Foo Fighters) and receive our unique VideoSurf ID for that entity (Foo Fighters = ID#19094, for example). With this ID, you can query our Entity Information API to receive a host of information for your use. Thumbnail images, classifications (musician, rock band), and videos broken down into relevant groupings (for Foo Fighters, groupings may be music videos, interviews, etc) are just some of the resources made available to you through this powerful API set.

Get Featured Video, Separated by Category

Our Featured Video API provides access to the hottest videos for the most popular video topics.  Specialize in sports content? No problem, we have videos for your site. Celebrity gossip? Television shows? Movies and trailers? Music videos? All of these and more are available through this API, allowing you to tailor content to a genre specific page or simply to specialize portions of your site around a specific theme.

Give Your Users More Than They Were Looking For

Already have the videos you’re looking for? Our Related Videos API finds videos relevant to a video result or featured video, allowing you to go beyond a single video as a reference and open up a wealth of entertainment and information for your users to explore.

Using our API to provide related videos will enrich your user’s experience on your site and increase the time they spend interacting with it.

Related Video API

VideoSurf’s APIs offer powerful possibilities for video integration with whatever project you may conceive. Singularly or combined, we provide the tools for you to use video as a way to stay current with the hottest topics and trends on the web.

Have a page or product in the works that uses our API, or just an idea for one? We’d love to hear about it! Let us know by contacting api@videosurf.com.
